Exterior scene lighting is a small part of an RV or trailer bill of materials, but it creates disproportionate problems when it is selected late. Poor mounting fit, narrow illumination and water ingress can lead to rework on the production line and complaints after delivery.
A structured specification process helps OEM builders, importers and component distributors reduce those risks.
Define the Lighting Task First
Scene lights may be used at entry doors, storage compartments, service points, campsite areas or around a mobile workshop. Each position has a different requirement. Door lighting prioritizes safe access, while service-area lighting needs broader working coverage.
The C-405A/C-405B series uses a surface-mount design with wide flood illumination. A broad pattern reduces dark zones and may allow one light family to serve several exterior positions. This can simplify purchasing and spare-part planning.
Choose Between Output and Package Size
C-405A provides 60W and 6000 lm from a 9–32V DC input. The brochure also shows flash and indicator functions. It suits applications that need stronger area lighting or a signaling function in the same surface-mounted unit.
C-405B is offered in 5, 9 and 13 inch versions. The three versions are rated at 15W/800 lm, 25W/1600 lm and 40W/2800 lm. This lets a vehicle builder scale output and housing length according to the installation position while keeping a consistent product family.
The C-405B dimensions are 127.5 × 67 × 45.6 mm, 227.5 × 67 × 45.6 mm and 327.5 × 67 × 45.6 mm. The common 67 mm height and 45.6 mm depth make it easier to evaluate several lengths against one body layout.
Why Surface Mounting Can Reduce Production Risk
A surface-mounted light avoids the deep cavity required by many recessed fixtures. This can be useful on insulated panels, storage doors and retrofit vehicles where cutting depth is limited.
Purchasing teams should still review screw spacing, cable exit, sealing method and access behind the panel. A sample should be installed on the real wall construction before the mounting pattern is frozen.
Output-Color Options
C-405B is shown with white or fluorescent-yellow output. White light is a conventional choice for general area illumination. Fluorescent yellow may be selected when visual distinction is a priority. Buyers should evaluate how the color works with the vehicle finish, user expectations and local rules.
Environmental Protection and Material Choice
The aluminum housing and polycarbonate lens are specified for outdoor vehicle use. The series is rated up to IP67 and is shown for operation from -40°C to +65°C.
For an OEM program, environmental protection is directly related to warranty exposure. Water ingress can damage the light and the vehicle panel around it. A protected housing, correct gasket compression and repeatable installation procedure help reduce service claims.
Compliance Review
The brochure lists ECE R10, ECE R65 and CE for C-405A. Buyers should request documents for the exact model and function being purchased. ECE R65 is relevant to warning-light functions, while installation requirements depend on the vehicle and market.
Do not assume that one approval automatically covers every output color, mode or mounting position. Document review should happen before packaging and production quantities are confirmed.
Questions to Ask a Supplier
A useful request for quotation should include the vehicle type, mounting position, model or size, required output color, voltage, annual quantity, packaging and approval documents. Ask for drawings, wiring information and sample lead time.
For a family such as C-405A/C-405B, also confirm whether all variants use the same connector and installation method. Common hardware can reduce assembly variation and lower spare-part inventory.
The best scene-light choice is the one that fits the panel, covers the real work area and can be installed repeatedly. Output specifications are important, but production consistency and field reliability create the larger commercial value.
